Ann an (in a) with new nouns and a new verb

February 11, 2011

Tha mi ag obair ann an… (Ha mee ahk opair aun ahn…)  I am working in a…

  • Tha mi ag obair ann an campa.  (KAHM-puh) camp.
  • Tha mi ag obair ann an cidsin.  (KEED-shin) kitchen.
  • Tha mi ag obair ann an garaids. (GAHR-adj) garage.
  • Tha mi ag obair ann an gàrradh.  (GAHR-agh) This can mean either garden or wall/ dyke.
  • Tha mi ag obair ann an gruagaire. (GROO-uh-gaire) hairdresser.

Try it with old verbs:

  • Tha mi a’ coisich ann an campa.
  • Tha mi a’ coisich  ann an cidsin.
  • Tha mi a’ coisich  ann an garaids.
  • Tha mi a’ coisich  ann an gàrradh.
  • Tha mi a’ coisich ann an gruagaire.

*Reminder: ag verb is used when the verb starts with a vowel.  A’ verb is used when the verb starts with a consonant.

And a’ draibhadh (driving):

  • Tha mi a’ draibhadh ann an campa.
  • Tha mi a’ draibhadh  ann an cidsin.
  • Tha mi a’ draibhadh  ann an garaids.
  • Tha mi a’ draibhadh  ann an gàrradh.

What can I say?  I have a very large kitchen, garden, garage, and hairdresser.  I need a càr to get around!

ag ithe (eating):

  • Tha mi ag ithe ann an campa.
  • Tha mi ag ithe  ann an cidsin.
  • Tha mi ag ithe  ann an garaids.
  • Tha mi ag ithe ann an gàrradh.
  • Tha mi ag ithe ann an gruagaire.

And a new verb, a’ cadail (uh CAH-dul) sleeping:

  • Tha mi a’ cadail ann an campa.
  • Tha mi a’ cadail  ann an cidsin.
  • Tha mi a’ cadail  ann an garaids.
  • Tha mi a’ cadail ann an gàrradh.
  • Tha mi a’ cadail ann an gruagaire.  (Hope she doesn’t mind too much.)

Today’s Listening, Can Seo, Episode 8, Part 2:

Don’t worry if this seems like too much.  Just listening and getting a feel for the sounds is good for learning, and I’ll be going back through these videos soon and covering what’s in them more in depth.  I understand there is a Can Seo book for sale, and would be happy to link to it if I could find it.  So far, I haven’t, so it may be out of print.  If anyone has a link, please let me know.

Thank you! I googled it and followed several links trying to find copies, that all ran into dead ends.

Sorry, don’t know what happened to my first comment there, but I was referring you to links to the Can Seo book. Perhaps you can edit my first comment, before you approve it, so the link works?

Hi, bwitch, I must have something in settings that kept links in the moderation queue. Thanks for finding that!
